CEMAS: the materials characterization hub for business and academia.
Understanding and advancing our knowledge of materials and phenomena are critical for technological advancements in all areas of science, engineering and medicine. To achieve this requires access to world-class characterization tools such as electron microscopes. Enabling us to “see” at the atomic scale, the instruments available at CEMAS yield unprecedented insights into structural and elemental properties.
"The wide array of materials characterization at the CEMAS facility has provided pH Matter with the ability to rapidly develop its commercial line of activated carbon additives for the Fuel Cell and Lithium Ion Battery markets. It's the close collaboration with CEMAS scientists that allows us to bring the state-of-the-art in materials development to our clients." -Michael Beachy, Senior Engineer, pH Matter
It is our goal to make CEMAS a user-friendly facility where you can complete your research in a productive way. A support team of technical, research, administrative and academic staff based at CEMAS provides comprehensive support to all users through a variety of mechanisms from contract research to collaborative projects.
There are three ways in which to complete your research:
1) Independently
Users may be trained by a member of our technical staff to independently operate the equipment. Once training has been completed, the user is granted access to reserve the equipment and self operate the microscope to complete their research as the schedules allow.
Training sessions will be charged the hourly microscope usage rate + the hourly labor rate. You may find our rates here. Independent use of the equipment is charged the hourly microscope rate.
2) Staff Led
This is ideal for a short pilot feasibility study or for a final image of a study. You will meet with the technical and research staff at CEMAS to discuss scope of the work and what you are trying to accomplish. You may drop your samples off with the staff and they will collect the data on your behalf. We encourage you to participate and sit in the session when possible.
Staff led sessions will be charged the hourly microscope usage rate + the hourly labor rate. You may find our rates here.
3) Remote Operation
Do you have the need for regular characterization tools at your fingertips? Every instrument in the facility is accessible through remote access. Contact us at cemas@osu.edu if you're interested in becoming a remote microscopy partner.
