About

Don is a member of Michael Mills' group. Electron microscopy is being conducted on nickel-base superalloy 718 to further understand the precipitation and growth of the γ’’ strengthening phase.  The γ’’ can also form as a complex composite particle with the γ’ phase, so understanding the nature of the nucleation of both phases is being studied.  Atomic-scale high angle annular dark field STEM imaging is used to view these particles at the earliest stages of their growth. The dislocations that are mobile under varying loading conditions and temperatures are being studied to understand their interactions with the γ’’.  Both aspects of this research are used to inform precipitate growth and yield strength computational models.
