About

Dr. Stephen R. Boona is a staff scientist at CEMAS responsible for providing training and support to users of our SEM, FIB, and x-ray CT instruments, with primary oversight and management responsibilities for CEMAS’s two state-of-the-art Apreo SEMs. In addition to directly supporting CEMAS’s users, Dr. Boona also contributes to teaching the Materials Science and Engineering department’s practical SEM laboratory course, conducts sample preparation and characterization work for academic and industrial CEMAS customers, and performs his own technique development research.

Dr. Boona joined the CEMAS staff in August of 2017 after spending four years as a Postdoctoral Researcher at The Ohio State University, first with Joseph P. Heremans in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and then with Fengyuan Yang at the OSU Center for Emergent Materials. Prior to that, he earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from Michigan State University in 2013 after receiving his Master of Science in Applied Physics from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in 2010 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from NIU in 2008. Altogether, Dr. Boona brings to CEMAS over a decade of experience in solid-state physics and materials science, including bulk materials synthesis and processing, physical and magnetic property measurements, and material characterization via imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis with both electron and x-ray probes.
