Ohio State's College of Engineering and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The college's first with a South African institution, the MOU allows CEMAS to collaborate with NMMU's Centre for High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy on research and scholarly exchanges. It also provides a platform to conduct joint workshops and seminars to identify specific areas where collaborative projects could be beneficial. This collaboration builds upon Dr. Hamish Fraser's relationship with NMMU as Honorary Professor.

An MOU like this also is useful if researchers at both institutions wish to jointly apply for grants and other major sources of funding.

With a history dating back to 1882, NMMU is a comprehensive university of 27,000 students offering degrees from seven faculties.

Serving a similar function as CEMAS, NMMU's Centre for High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy provides a broad community of South African scientists and students with a full range of state-of-the-art instruments and expertise for materials research.
