Samuel Luther, a graduate fellow in The Ohio State University Department of Materials Science and Engineering, submitted the award-winning image for the second Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) Micrograph Competition.

Luther presented the highest scoring entry titled “Frozen Waves”, which shows thermal faceting on the fracture surface of nickel-based weld metal subject to elevated temperature embrittlement and tensile failure.

Luther, who studies welding engineering, has previously won numerous awards for his images, including the Class 4 Artistic Microscopy (Color) division for the 2019 International Metallographic Contest.

The CEMAS Micrograph Competition was designed to further recognize the impactful, artistic work being conducted at CEMAS. Every day, users at CEMAS are collecting data that is as relevant to the scientific community as it is creative and beautiful.

The competition is open to all members of the CEMAS user community. The top-3 finishers received a gift from CEMAS and will have their image featured on the CEMAS website and social media platforms. Check back for details about the next round submission process.
