The Department of Materials Science and Engineering welcomes Dr. Salva Salmani-Rezaie

Dr. Salva Salmani-Rezaie has accepted a position with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as an assistant professor, a position she will assume in autumn 2023.

Ohio State’s reputation as having one of the world’s best microscopy centers was not lost on Dr. Salva-Rezaie. The tenure-track faculty member will join the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) where she will use the center’s $40M worth of technology to investigate defects, symmetry, and local structures of quantum materials.

During her visits to Ohio State in autumn 2021, Salva recognized the rich collaborative culture that facilitates success of junior faculty members and gives rise to multi-PI programs. “Besides having the opportunity to work with great colleagues, I am very excited to mentor undergraduate and graduate students at Ohio State. I know many MSE graduates from Ohio State whose professional success can be directly connected to the education, mentoring and training they received at Ohio State.”

Salva is excited for opportunities to collaborate with many of Ohio State’s internationally recognized scientists, mentors and academicians. One of her goals is to channel their leadership to develop her mentorship skills. She has a passion for educating next generation materials scientists about the impact of macroscopic and atomic-scale structures on materials.

Dr. Salmani-Rezaie received her PhD from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2021 and is currently a Kavli Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University. Her research is focused on understanding local orders on magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials using recently developed microscopy and microanalysis techniques such as 4D STEM, electron ptychography, and quantitative STEM. Understanding the structure-property-composition relation will help explain the relationship between hidden quantum orders and properties and guide us to logically design the next generation of multifunctional materials.

We welcome Dr. Salmani-Rezaie to the Buckeye family and look forward to her arrival. She will relocate to Columbus next summer.
