CEMAS Update: Holiday Message

Posted:
Oval Winter

As the holiday break nears, the Ohio State University Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) team would like to thank our incredible community of students, faculty, facility users, industry partners, and collaborators for their unwavering support.

Please note that CEMAS will be closed from December 23 - January 2. This extended break was designed to give faculty and staff additional opportunities to rest, recharge, and spend time with their families. During this time, most instruments will be on standby and unavailable. CEMAS will resume standard operating hours on January 3, 2022.

The heart of our mission at Ohio State and CEMAS is education and research, and despite the historic challenges the past two years have brought, we’ve been able to carry out this role, together. Some illustrations of this commitment over the past year include but are not limited to:

  • Graduate students at CEMAS came together to create the CEMAS Graduate Wellness Committee. The group’s main objective is to cultivate community through a series of fun activities and events that provide a support system for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
  • Case Western Reserve University’s Swagelok Center for Surface Analysis of Materials (SCSAM) became the latest facility to gain remote access to CEMAS. This connection allows students and researchers at Case Western Reserve to leverage CEMAS instrumentation from its campus in Cleveland, Ohio. Contact us at cemas@osu.edu if you're interested in becoming a remote microscopy partner.
  • CEMAS team members were among those recognized with an Institute for Materials Research (IMR) Keep Researching Award for their outstanding performance and commitment throughout the pandemic.
  • Graduate Research Associate Binbin Wang was awarded a Presidential Fellowship, which is the most prestigious award given by the Graduate School. Wang is advised by David W. McComb, the director of CEMAS, and is researching topology in magnetic materials using advanced electron microscopes.
  • Kye Stachowski, a doctoral student from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, submitted the award-winning image for the inaugural CEMAS Micrograph Competition. His top-scoring image titled “Bend before we create” featured a cryo-EM micrograph of a tetrameric protein-nucleic acid complex.

Along with these achievements, CEMAS provides users with the advanced instrumentation, training, and expertise needed to undertake research. To review a list of publications produced by users of CEMAS, visit https://go.osu.edu/cemas-publications
