Cutting-edge research, or an alluring piece of art? The answer is uniquely both.

Sam Luther, a graduate fellow in Ohio State’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, earned top honors in Class 4 Artistic Microscopy (Color) for the 2019 International Metallographic Contest. His winning image, entitled “Dawn to Dusk,” was uncovered at Ohio State’s Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis.

The entry was featured by the International Metallographic Society (IMS) as their November 2019 Image of the Month. The image is also on the cover of the November/December issue of Advanced Materials & Processes magazine.

The background is a 10,000×-magnification image of the fracture surface of ductility-dip cracking in a nickel-based filler metal 52M multipass weld. Thermal faceting was observed on the surface, the varying topography of which serves as the background for each color.

The high resolution and high depth of field were achieved on an FEI Sirion Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

Luther, who studies welding engineering, previously earned honorable mention in 2017 and runner-up accolades in 2018 for image submissions. This year, he was awarded a cash prize for his winning entry.

Ohio State’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering also highlighted his achievement.
