The MSA Fellow designation honors those who have been conferred the society's Distinguished Scientist Awards, as well as senior distinguished members of the society who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the field of microscopy and microanalysis. Successful nominations demonstrate contributions to both science and service. The number of MSA members elected to fellowship each year is restricted to no more than 0.5 percent of the total membership.

McComb is being recognized for development of electron energy-loss spectrometry and its application to inorganic, organic and molecular systems, as well as the development and implementation of remote microscopy for teaching and learning. He is the director of Ohio State’s Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS), where the remote microscopy resources are based.

A chemistry graduate from the University of Glasgow, McComb completed his PhD in Physics at the University of Cambridge. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Materials. Before coming to Ohio State in 2011, he was co-director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology as well as Director of Research and Deputy Head of the Department of Materials at Imperial College London.

Only eight members of the society will be inducted in this year’s class. College of Engineering Dean David B. Williams was elected to the fellowship in 2010, and Materials Science and Engineering Professor and Ohio Regents Scholar Hamish Fraser was elected in 2013.
